The sidewalks around Capital One Arena in D.C. were packed with excitement hours before Korean singer-songwriter and actress, IU, was set to take the stage on Monday, July 22. Fashionably dressed fans, known as Uaena, gathered up and down the block taking photos of the large marquees that advertised the night’s performance. Once inside, the anticipation was palpable throughout every level of the arena as fans purchased merchandise and quickly found their seats, excitedly chatting about their favorite songs, and syncing their light sticks in preparation for the performance.
Upon taking their seats, attendees were greeted with a special gift: a pink tin box adorned with a stencil image of IU and the words “The Winning.” Inside, they found a selection of keepsakes including photocards, a magnet, and a charming keyring with various charms. Later in the performance, IU shared that her mother had designed these gifts with the hope that Uaena would treasure them as a memento of the show. This heartfelt gesture instantly endeared IU even more to her fans, adding a personal touch to the concert experience.
The concert was structured into five distinct segments—Hypnotic, Energetic, Romantic, Ecstatic, and Heroic—each introduced by captivating video interludes. IU delivered a spectacular three-hour performance, seamlessly transitioning through each segment with unique backdrops, lighting, and outfits, showcasing her extensive discography.
When the lights finally dimmed, the crowd erupted into deafening cheers and applause as IU entered center stage wearing an elegant gown. She rose on a platform that ascended from the multi-level floor, and kicked off the evening with "Holssi," a track from her latest EP, The Winning. She was accompanied by a group of local child performers who joyfully danced around throughout the song. Confetti cannons blasted across the front of the stage signifying the official opening of the show. IU continued with a few more songs, such as "Jam Jam" and "BBIBBI," while dynamic groups of dancers added to the excitement with their impressive choreography during pivotal points throughout her performance. Between tracks, IU frequently acknowledged the audience’s infectious energy and stellar dance moves.
Moving into the next segment, Energetic, IU arrived at the stage in a sporty outfit and cat ear headband to perform more fan-favorite songs like “Celebrity,” “Bleuming'' and “I stan U.” The crowd mirrored her enthusiasm, bouncing and dancing in unison while a colorful sea of light sticks flickered in time with the music.
Midway through the night, a touching video intermission played. It showed clips of Uaena waiting in line earlier in the day accompanied by an instrumental version of “Heart” in the background. IU reappeared on stage to move into the second half of the night, introducing the Romantic segment with heartfelt ballads like “Meaning of You” and a special acoustic version of “strawberry moon.” Her guitarist joined her on stage, and fans swayed and sang along, fully immersed in the emotional atmosphere.
Teasing that she only had three songs left, fans expressed their sadness over the night coming to an end. Rounding out her set with a Heroic-themed encore, emotions were running high as IU closed out with a powerful rock version of the same song she opened with, “Holssi,” while more confetti exploded across the venue in celebration. IU then departed the stage while waving and thanking the crowd. Undeterred, Uaena chanted for a second encore, which IU graciously granted. Reappearing in her tour merch, she let the audience choose the final songs of the night. The crowd selected five tracks — “Windflower,” “Hold My Hand,” an abbreviated “Autumn Morning,” “Knees,” and “Palette” — bringing the unforgettable night to a memorable close.
