Philly is where it’s at this summer! The highly anticipated annual Roots Picnic festival that started in 2007, will be taking place in Fairmont Park this June. Created and hosted by the hip-hop group, The Roots, the festival will be headlined by Lil Wayne, Victoria Money, Gunna, and Nas. If their names sound familiar you might recognize The Roots, from The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, as they are the house band for the urban late night talk show. In an ode to celebrate diversity, community, and music, this festival brings together art, music, and life making this festival a summer bucket list must-do. Here are some must-see artists:
SEXYY RED
Her music will bring out your inner baddie. Climbing to the top of the charts for hip hop, dirty rap, and trap sounds, she rose to fame in 2023.Her viral track “Pound Town '' received a sequel remix featuring Nicki Minaj landing her on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time. Since then Sexyy Red has been unstoppable, featuring on Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy,” and Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott and Chris Brown’s, “FCTU.” Sexyy Red will have your hands on your knees, shaking that ass for her.

Five-time Grammy Award winner, pianist, producer, songwriter and arranger, Robert Glasper has a repertoire full of soul, and talent. Known for merging various musical genres with jazz, he has understood the assignment of bringing music to life. His intricate smooth rhythms will be joined by the emotive rich depth of the voice of Yebba. Also a Grammy Award Winner, her voice mesmerized many on Youtube and Instagram skyrocketing her career. “Twin, where have you been?” The voice behind this viral audio clip, Muni Long, like many modern day artists, showcased her talent and amassed a fan base through social media.

Unlike the title of one of her top hits, “Overrated”, she is a musical artist who is underrated, as she is making waves through the genres of R&B and soul. With a distinct style, and rhythm Kenya Vaun has a nostalgic melody to her music. Her lyrics are raw and intimate, often reflecting on her life experiences.and lyrics of her personal thoughts and realization throughout her life. When you catch her on stage this summer you will be able to feel the passion and liveliness of her music.
BLK ODYSSY
Blending elements of jazz, soul, hip-op and electronic music, this collective’s unique and explorative sound will have you immersed into their sound. With an innovative approach to musical production, they have garnered attention for their live performances and lyrics that stem from front man Sam Houston’s life experiences, including the loss of his brother’s life to police brutality. The emotion and story emerged from such experiences are highlighted in their album “BLK VINTAGE ''. Blk Odyssey is a collective representing a new wave of musical creativity and musical expression you do not want to miss.
